In 2019, there were 211,455 motor vehicle collisions in New York City. This was a 9.5% decrease in accidents when compared to 2018’s total of 231,560. However, car crashes with motorists injuries increased from 2018 to 2019.
Motorist Injuries
In 2019, there were 46,261 motor vehicle collisions where motorists were injured. This was a .04% increase from 2018’s total of 46,069. However, the number of motorist fatalities decreased from 2018 to 2019.
Motorist Fatalities
In 2019, 85 motorist fatalities resulted from motor vehicle accidents. This was a 15% decrease from 2018’s total of 98 motorist fatalities. However, 2019’s decrease in motorist fatalities is offset by its increase in pedestrian fatalities.
Pedestrian Fatalities
In 2019, 131 pedestrian fatalities resulted from motor vehicle accidents in New York City (the most pedestrian deaths of any city in the United States in 2019 given current data). This was an 8% increase from 2018’s total of 121 pedestrian fatalities. Now let’s take a look at the 2019 total of persons injured in New York City accidents.
Persons Injured
In 2019, there were 61,372 persons injured in motor vehicle accidents in New York City. When compared to 2018’s total of 61,941 persons injured, 2019’s total is a 1% increase.

Over 74,000 collision locations are unknown. Therefore, these are the rankings based on known collision locations.
- Brooklyn — 44,473 car accidents;
- Queens — 39,859 car accidents;
- Manhattan — 26,591 car accidents;
- Bronx — 22,428 car accidents ;
- Staten Island — 3,650 car accidents.
The street with the highest amount of car accidents in 2019 was Belt Parkway, with 50,983.
Interestingly, the borough collision rankings aren’t the same as the borough injury rankings.

Over 24,000 persons injured locations are unknown. Therefore, these are the rankings based on known persons injured sites.
- Brooklyn — 13,006 persons injured;
- Queens — 11,094 persons injured;
- Bronx — 6,526 persons injured;
- Manhattan — 5,238 persons injured;
- Staten Island — 1403 persons injured.
The street with the highest number of persons injured in 2019 was Belt Parkway, with 8,823.
